Physiological and Social Benefits and Costs of Breastfeeding

Research on human milk, conducted by scholars in the biological and physical sciences, has focused on the physiology of lactation. Human milk is the complex result of the long evolution of a product that met the specific needs of the human infant far better than any formula devised in a laboratory. The physiological benefits of breastfeeding to mother and infant are high and the costs are modest for both. The social benefits and costs are another story. For infants, benefits are high (and well documented) and costs are nil while the mother’s social benefits are modest but her social costs are very high owing to women’s exclusion from the activities that bring high prestige.
